Lesson 1: Introductions

For the next few days we will be taking time to get to know each other.  There is an introduction sheet below for folks who were unable to be in class on day 1.  Please fill out the questions on the sheet and be sure to also let me know what made you choose this class and if there are specific topics/questions you have about Indigenous issues/topics/cultures.  I do not have all of the answers and I do not, by any means, speak for all Indigenous people but I will help with what I can and help guide you to the answers I don't have.

I am really happy to have everyone back and to be working with you again in this way.  I am looking forward to the quarter with you.

Lesson 2: Introductions to ideas

This lesson is introducing us to main ideas and terms which will help us to understand Indigenous ways of seeing the world.  We will talk more about world view later, but for now we will be getting to know ideas like: protocols, Indigenous spirituality, the connection between the land and First Nations people, and the significance of story to First Peoples.  We will be working with our table partner to fill in a pie graph which will help with a chart later this week.  Both the readings and the questions, along with the pie graph are here.  I will record the readings in the next couple of days and place them on the web page.

The PDF files with the questions includes all of the handouts we will be working on for this section of the introduction.

I will have paper handouts in class for you to work on, as well as copies of the intro from the text as well.

Final Project

Choose one of the Elders from the folx you heard from in "In Their Own Words." Write a letter to one of them thanking them for their courage and generosity to share with us so that we are able to learn the truth about what happens in Canada to Indigenous peoples. The ppl in class are making tiles as a gift.  I will be sending the tiles and the letters to the elders. See the PDF below for the instructions. I know the title of the page in the PDF is English First Ppls 11 but the assignment is the same.
